Choose Missionary Ridge Local for a shorter railway outing and Chickamauga Turn when you want the train trip to occupy most of the day. Rails, Wizards & Spells is a seasonal themed experience. For Christmas, North Pole Limited includes Santa; Holiday Christmas Lights does not. These five products are from Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, and dates, stations and inclusions must be checked on the specific ticket.

1. Missionary Ridge Local: start here for a shorter outing
TVRM lists the Missionary Ridge Local as a roughly 65-minute trip with a tunnel passage, turntable demonstration and restoration-shop component. It is the option we would compare first for a child’s initial heritage-train visit or for adults who want railway history without committing the whole day.
Allow additional time for arrival and getting settled rather than treating the published ride duration as your entire visit. Keep lunch flexible afterward. If your child mostly wants to board a train, a shorter product can meet that wish better than a longer excursion chosen because it sounds more impressive. Confirm the day’s operating details; this guide does not promise a particular locomotive.
2. Chickamauga Turn: let the train be the day’s main event
The operator describes a six-hour excursion with about 90 minutes in Chickamauga. Its published 2026 season runs on selected dates from March 28 through November 1. The layover is a useful distinction from a short out-and-back ride, but it also means the complete experience occupies a substantial part of the day.
Choose this because your family wants an excursion, not simply because a shorter ride is unavailable. Review meal arrangements and what the layover allows before planning extra sightseeing. We would avoid putting a major timed Chattanooga attraction immediately after the return. Travelers with restless young children should weigh the long seated portions against the pleasure of making a whole day of rail travel.
3. Rails, Wizards & Spells: compare the whole event
TVRM lists this themed experience on selected dates September 18–October 25, 2026. The approximately two-and-a-half-hour duration covers the broader event, including its Enchanted Forest and Wizards Way Village elements; it is not a promise of that much continuous train travel.
This distinction matters if one child wants trains while another wants the fantasy theme. Look at both parts of the product before booking. Ask which areas are outdoors and plan clothing for the whole visit. We would put it on a relaxed afternoon rather than squeezing it between two attractions, so the event can feel like an outing rather than a transfer to the next appointment.
4. North Pole Limited: the Santa choice
North Pole Limited lists selected departures November 13–December 23, 2026, with a ride of about 75 minutes. Santa visits assigned seats, and the operator lists hot chocolate, a cookie, stories and music. Passengers do not get off at the “North Pole.” Arrive at least 30 minutes early, as the operator requests.
Compare the actual seating product before paying for an upgrade. The option called Santa’s Private Car is sold as tables for two to four, not exclusive use of an entire railcar. We would choose seats around the group’s needs before adding other evening plans. Expect lights at focal areas rather than a continuously illuminated route.
5. Holiday Christmas Lights: after Christmas, without Santa
The Holiday Christmas Lights train lists selected dates December 26, 2026–January 10, 2027, with a journey of roughly 60–65 minutes. The operator explicitly excludes Santa, onboard refreshments and the restoration-shop visit. This is a different product from North Pole Limited, not a later date for the same Santa experience.
Choose it if the family wants the train and seasonal lights after Christmas. If meeting Santa is the purpose, those dates will not solve the problem. Lights are concentrated around the depots and selected parts of the route rather than lining the entire journey. Explain that expectation to children before boarding.
Get the station and arrival plan right
TVRM’s Chattanooga operations use Grand Junction at 4119 Cromwell Road, but follow the station printed on your specific confirmation. The museum also advertises departures elsewhere in the region. Do not navigate to the Chattanooga Choo Choo simply because the name sounds like the place for a train ride.
Historic equipment can have boarding and accessibility limitations. Discuss your exact needs with TVRM before paying, and check the time zone on the confirmation. Our planning recommendation is one rail product plus a flexible meal. Save a second major attraction for another day unless you choose the shortest ride and have a comfortable gap.
Where to book and what a comparison link covers
Use the TVRM product resources below for the five train tickets in this guide. We have not verified a matching Viator admission listing for them. The optional Viator links on this page compare other Chattanooga experiences and should not be mistaken for rail admission.
Before checkout, verify the product name, date, arrival time, station, seating arrangement, child ticket rules and cancellation policy together. Seasonal names can sound similar while the inclusions differ substantially. Keeping that confirmation handy is more useful than relying on a screenshot of a general calendar.

Frequently asked questions.
Which Chattanooga Christmas train includes Santa?
North Pole Limited includes Santa. Holiday Christmas Lights, running after Christmas on selected dates, explicitly does not.
Is Missionary Ridge Local a full-day excursion?
No. TVRM lists it at about 65 minutes, before your arrival and departure time. Chickamauga Turn is the longer excursion in this comparison.
Is Santa’s Private Car an entire private railcar?
No. The operator describes that North Pole Limited seating option as tables for two to four people, not exclusive use of a whole car.
Are the seasonal rides available every day?
No. The dates shown are season windows with selected departures. Use the product’s live calendar for the day and time you want.
Do these trains leave from the Chattanooga Choo Choo?
Follow the TVRM station on your ticket. Its Chattanooga operations use Grand Junction, and other regional products can use different departure stations. Do not assume the Choo Choo is your boarding point.
