For a couples trip, start with an adults-only cruise or shared sail. With children, check the exact age policy before booking. Choose a private charter when having the boat to yourselves matters more than the lowest per-person price. Departure location can be as important as the boat.

1 and 2 Adults-only or family-friendly cruising
Florida Water Tours separates its adults-only sunset departure, for ages 21 and older, from the Sunset Eco Cruise for ages five and older. Both list 90 minutes on the water. That distinction makes this an unusually useful first filter: a 19-year-old cannot join the adults-only option, while “family-friendly” does not mean every age is admitted.
Our choice for a mixed-age group is to check eligibility before comparing scenery or drinks. For two adults, decide whether conversation and a bar-led setting appeal more than nature interpretation. Neither label establishes how quiet a particular departure will feel; ask the operator if atmosphere is central to the occasion.
Exact supplier listing. Select the adults-only or family option carefully; vessel names and age rules can differ between booking channels. Confirm the selected option before paying.

4 A private sunset sailing charter
The same operator lists customizable private charters for groups up to six. Confirm the exact vessel and capacity for your request. Privacy is the meaningful upgrade: you avoid paying for an intimate occasion and discovering that “small group” still includes strangers.
For a proposal, anniversary or friends trip, request the full boat price and a written list of extras. Divide that total by the actual number traveling, then compare it with the equivalent shared booking. This is a budgeting method, not evidence that private sailing is cheaper. Tell the operator about any planned surprise before payment; do not assume a photographer, flowers or custom route is included.

5 Schooner Freedom from the downtown marina
Schooner Freedom lists a two-hour sunset sail from the Municipal Marina, 111 Avenida Menendez. Its location makes it worth considering when you want to keep the evening centered downtown. The operator says there is no dedicated marina parking, so a convenient meeting point on the map is not a guarantee of an easy arrival by car.
Availability alert: the product page currently displays a September 21–November 3 maintenance notice without a year in the notice itself. Other seasonal text on the site differs between pages. Confirm directly before arranging a trip around this sail; we are not treating it as an available departure for your dates.

Choose the meeting point before the restaurant
Florida Water Tours departs from Camachee Cove and requests check-in 15 minutes before departure. St. Augustine Sailing lists 3076 Harbor Drive at Camachee Cove Yacht Harbor. Schooner Freedom uses the downtown Municipal Marina. These are not interchangeable pickup points.
Build the evening backward from the boarding instructions. Include travel from the hotel, parking or drop-off, check-in and a margin for finding the correct dock. Afterward, leave room to disembark and travel to dinner. We would avoid a prepaid dinner immediately after the scheduled return: a tightly packed evening leaves no room for an operational delay.
Five questions worth asking before payment
Ask whether your party meets the age rules; which boat and seating are planned; whether food and drinks are included; how boarding works for anyone with mobility needs; and what happens if weather cancels the trip. Save the answers with your confirmation.
Our selection is about five different booking choices, not five independently tested operators. We have not sailed these departures. A sunset photograph cannot establish current conditions, and neither a colorful sky nor wildlife sightings should be treated as guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions.
Which sunset cruise can children take?
Florida Water Tours lists its Sunset Eco Cruise for ages five and older. Ask other operators about their exact age policies; family-friendly wording is not a universal rule.
Is a private sunset charter worth it for two?
Consider it when privacy is the purpose of the outing. Compare the complete private quote with two shared tickets, including extras, rather than assuming the premium is small.
Do all boats leave from downtown?
No. The options here include Camachee Cove and the Municipal Marina downtown. Follow the address in your booking confirmation.
Will a sunset cruise include dinner?
Do not assume so. Book a product explicitly described as a dinner experience and confirm the menu and inclusions.
What should we do if the weather looks poor?
Read the cancellation and rescheduling policy, then contact the operator. Keep a flexible land-based evening available.
